Halotrade was a supply chain transparency initiative that explored how blockchain technology could be used to improve the traceability and sustainability of goods as they moved through complex supply chains.
Supported through Barclays' innovation and accelerator programmes, the project investigated how distributed ledger technologies could provide greater visibility into the movement of products while enabling future applications such as smart contracts and automated financial settlement.
Nekologic developed an iOS prototype to support a pilot implementation of the concept. The application allowed users to track goods as they moved through a supply chain, using QR code scanning to verify the completion of individual stages and record fulfilment events to a Hyperledger-based blockchain.
The concept combined mobile applications, distributed ledger technology, and supply chain tracking to build more transparent and trustworthy logistics systems. It also provided early practical experience with enterprise blockchain technologies and their application to real-world business problems.
